Sonic Youth frontman Thurston Moore has joined forces with members of Nachtmystium, the Atlas Moth, Leviathan and Krieg to form the black metal band Twilight. Having just been signed to Century Media, Twilight plan to begin recording their debut album sometime this month.

A black metal band is probably one of the last places you’d expect to see alt rock god Thurston Moore, but he’ll be learning from the best as he and his Twilight bandmates hit the studio — namely Nachtmystium frontman Blake Judd. Moore is definitely getting into black metal mode, promising, “We’re not coming together to make music, we’re joining forces to destroy all rational thought.”

Blake Judd has a long history of beautifully molding alternative and avant-garde influences into Nachtmystium, and in a recent interview with the1stfive.com, Judd declared his love for Sonic Youth and ’90s alternative rock. “I was a Nirvana fan when I was a kid,” says Judd. “I’m twenty-eight or twenty-nine years old now, so I grew up during that, and that’s what I listened to when I was a kid. I had Sonic Youth records when I was twelve. And to now know that, not only am I having a dialogue with this person about anything, but dude’s gonna join a band I started, and it’s like…woah. F—ing amazing, amazing feeling.”

He continues, “That is a perfect example of like what people ask: “What’s the best thing about what you do?” You know, most people expect the answer to be traveling, sex, money. No, man. The thing that makes me feel like I’m rich is the experience.”

Judd adds, “Century Media could offer us a hundred thousand dollars to make that Twilight record and say, “Blake, you get ninety percent of that money but Thurston Moore’s not gonna be on the record, or, you can be on it and we’ll give you ten grand and that’s what you have to make it work. And I would, I would take the ten grand and work with Thurston. That’s like how much I love Sonic Youth.”

Nachtmystium just released their sixth full-length journey into the abyss, ‘Silencing Machine,’ on July 31.
