Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan Plans to ‘Piss’ on Radiohead

So, as it turns out, Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan is not a Radiohead fan.

Corgan aired his grievances regarding the critically beloved U.K. rockers during a recent interview with Antiquiet, first claiming allegiance with “Weird Al” Yankovic — “I can’t think of any people outside of [Yankovic] who have both embraced and pissed on rock more than I have” — before launching into a tirade about his impatience with so-called “pomposity.”

“Obviously there’s a level of reverence, but there’s also a level of intelligence to even know what to piss on,” explained Corgan. “‘Cause I’m not pissing on Rainbow. I’m not pissing on Deep Purple. But I’ll piss on f—in’ Radiohead, because of all this pomposity.”

Corgan, who has issued several multiple-album sets with names like ‘Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness’ and ‘Machina II/The Friends and Enemies of Modern Music,’ drew a line in the pompous sand between Radiohead and Deep Purple, saying, “This value system that says Jonny Greenwood is more valuable than Ritchie Blackmore … Not in the world I grew up in, buddy. Not in the world I grew up in.”

Driving his point home for the presumably startled journalist who’d opened the floodgates, Corgan concluded, “I find myself defending things. Is Ritchie Blackmore a better guitar player than me and Jonny Greenwood? Yes. Have we all made contributions? Yes. I’m not attacking that. I’m attacking the pomposity that says this is more valuable than that. I’m sick of that. I’m so f—ing sick of it, and nobody seems to tire of it.”

In other news, former Deep Purple keyboard player Jon Lord will release a new album this fall, a classical recording with the not-at-all-pompous title ‘Concerto for Group and Orchestra.’
