Horror film master John Carpenter had some harsh words for Rob Zombie during a talk at the New York Film Academy earlier this year. Carpenter denied he had been “very cold” to Zombie, as the rock icon claimed, before calling Zombie a “piece of s—t” and offering harsh criticism toward his Halloween remakes.

John Carpenter’s Halloween movies are the stuff of film legend, revolutionizing the idea of what an independent film can accomplish at the box office. Nearly 30 years after the original Halloween hit silver screens across the world, Rob Zombie offered his own interpretation of Halloween and Halloween II. The films were financially successful, but were shredded by critics.

“He lied about me,” Carpenter said about Zombie at the New York Film Academy. “He said I was very cold to him when he told me he was going to make it. Nothing could be further from the truth. I said, ‘Make it your own movie, man. This is yours now. Don’t worry about me.’ I was incredibly supportive. Why that piece of s—t lied, I don’t know. He had no reason to.”

As for Zombie’s Halloween re-imaginings, Carpenter said, “I thought he took away the mystique of the story by explaining too much about [Michael Myers]. I don’t care about that. He’s supposed to be a force of nature, he’s supposed to be almost supernatural, and he was too big.”

During an exclusive interview at the 2015 Loudwire Music Festival, Zombie spoke about why he chose to remake the Halloween films. “People say, ‘Why would you [remake] Halloween? That’s iconic.’ Which it is, but that’s why I wanted to make it different. I love John Carpenter, I’ve known John for a long time and I love Halloween, but to me, I always thought the sequels were kind of sh—ty, so I was like, ‘Well, they already s—t all over it.’ If there had never been another Halloween movie, maybe I wouldn’t have done it.”

Rob Zombie’s latest horror attraction, 31, was released on Sept. 16. Check your local theaters to see if it’s playing on a silver screen near you. 31 is also available to rent on iTunes and other outlets.
