It's not too late to join in the fight against breast cancer in Wyoming, with the Pink Ribbon Runs in Casper and Cheyenne Saturday, August 12th.

Organized by the Wyoming Breast Cancer Initiative (WBCI) in partnership with the Wyoming Community Foundation, these events help raise funds "to increase breast cancer awareness and prevention across Wyoming", according to their mission.

"We rank very poorly in terms of mammography in Wyoming and we know that early detection saves lives," says Advisory Team Member and breast cancer survivor Bobbi Barrasso. She says the Susan G. Komen Foundation, which used to provide support for these services in Wyoming, left the state and WBCI, which is volunteer-led, was founded in early 2016 to fill the need by raising funds to be granted back into Wyoming breast cancer programs. "We provide funds for education, and for screening, for navigation services (for patients) and for recognition, such as the Pink Ribbon Run and associated activities."

Last year, WCBI granted some $75,000 into 13 programs in nine Wyoming counties, and also granted into a statewide voucher program managed by the Department of Health's Wyoming Cancer Resource Services. All of the money raised stays in Wyoming.

If you can't make it to Casper or Cheyenne, you can still participate. "We have virtual events that are going on around the state," says Advisory Team member Abby Huck, who is also with Wyoming Health Fairs, "so if you can't make it to Cheyenne or Casper go ahead and register on the website www.wyomingbreastcancer.org and walk wherever you are, and you can post your pictures to Facebook or Instagram and tag them with the hashtag #paintwyomingpink2017."

In Casper, the Pink Ribbon Run and Walk will be start at the Tate Pumphouse and use the River Pathway. Survivors will be honored starting at 7 a.m., and the event itself starts at 8 a.m. You can register the day of the walk or in advance at www.wyomingbreastcancer.org. The fee is $30 per person for adults, $15 for children 5 to 18, and free for survivors and children under 5. Wyoming Health Fairs will also host and area for resource booths with breast cancer and other health information.
