It's not unusual these days to hear someone claim they saw a Bigfoot. It becomes next level when a trained field geologist says they had such an encounter, but that's exactly what happened 44 years ago near Yellowstone National Park.

The Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization documents this wild encounter which occurred in the Spring of 1978 between Cody and the east entrance of Yellowstone National Park. It involved the eyewitness testimony of not just one, but two trained geologists who were on their way to Yellowstone. They were driving on Highway 14 approaching a corner when the strangeness began. Here's a small part of their testimony:

As we came around a curve in the road our high beams illuminated a large dark shaggy figure coming up out of the ditch on the left side (south)of the road at a distance of about 200 -250 ft. As we approached the figure at a speed of about 45 miles per hour, it looked first at the vehicle (we noticed the yellow reflection from it's eyes that is seen in a dog's eye when light catches it at night) then deliberately turned it's head away from the lights. That motion was non-human or bearlike, in that the the shoulders, chest and head moved simultaneously as it caught site of our vehicle and then turned it's face away from the headlights.

They slammed on their brakes to figure out exactly what they had come across. Slowly, they looked into the canyon to see where the creature had disappeared into. Afterward, they proceeded to the east gate of Yellowstone to try and find a ranger, but the hour was late and they were unable to.

As the story goes, they all agreed to not talk about what they had seen until they could individually write down their accounts separately and compare notes to insure they weren't influencing each other. Their independent reports painted an almost identical picture. There were 3 common themes.

1. The creature was between 7 and 8 feet tall

2. Weight estimated to be 600 to 800 pounds.

3. It was not a bear

The geologists noted that it was a cold, clear night with great visibility. The sighting happened at approximately 1:45am in the morning. None of them were under the influence of alcohol or medication. It's also worth mentioning that the report says neither of them believe in ghosts or UFO's. As for Bigfoot, it's likely this 1978 Spring encounter just east of Yellowstone has changed their minds.
