(rockAAA) Jane’s Addiction frontman Perry Farrell says he’s still not sure why Duff McKagan quit the band just months after joining.

The ex-Guns n’Roses and Velvet Revolver bassist replaced original Jane’s member Eric Avery last year, but left again soon afterwards.

A full explanation was never given – and Farrell says it’s because the band never received one.

He tells Rolling Stone: “I couldn’t really tell you what his problem was. You can ask him. He’s calling it ‘creative differences’.

“I know he didn’t like the idea of us using electronics at all. That was his complaint. We’ve got our gripes too, but what’s the point?”

The band’s next album has the working title The Great Escape Artist and explores the theme of escaping. Farrell says it’s unlike anything they’ve recorded before, and he likes that aspect.

“It’s a mixture of the post-punk goth darkness we had with what’s going on today with groups like Muse and Radiohead. As much as I want to appease fans and make old fans love me, I can’t help myself from moving forward.”

TV on the Radio bassist Dave Sitek is working with Jane’s on the album, both playing and writing, but it’s not decided whether he’ll join the band on their upcoming tour.

Farrell says: “The first time we got together I played him music and explained how I’ve been working. He was so for it. Now he’s a real important person in my life.

“I’ve got some ideas about who should play bass live, and Dave is among them. But he’s not a guy who likes to go on tours, so we haven’t decided yet.”

The singer says relationships are reasonably calm with guitarist Dave Navarro and drummer Stephen Perkins, despite the stormy episodes of the past.

“We’re like brothers,” he reports. “One of my kids smacked the other one on the head this morning, but at the same time they hate being separated. On a plane one will say, ‘I want to sit with my brother’. That’s how I feel about Dave and Steve.”

Jane’s Addiction plan a single release in March followed by the album in summer.
