If you’ve been looking for an excuse to travel to New York City this fall, good news: The 2012 CMJ Music Marathon looks like it’ll live up to its name with a four-day extravaganza of bands that’s currently scheduled to includ thee Walkmen, Kimbra, Mountain Goats, and many, many more.

Filling up four days and more than 80 venues, the Marathon offers more than enough entertainment to justify the cost of a badge — which will currently set you back $525 without a student discount. Aside from the parties, seminars, and assorted special events, the event will play host to nearly 100 industry panels — and then there’s the music lineup, which will boast sets from hundreds of artists.

The initial lineup, which was just announced, is a dizzying blend of well-known acts (including GZA and Talib Kweli, in addition to the aforementioned Walkmen, Kimbra, and Mountain Goats) and indie up-and-comers like King Tuff, the Stepkids and Black Milk.

Mark your calendars for Oct. 16-20, when it’s all scheduled to go down — and pass the time by taking a look at the complete current lineup, listed at the CMJ site now.
