The American worker faces many challenges in today's workplace. Americans work tons of extra hours each year.

Six key metrics were used in the study, conducted in over one hundred of the largest cities in the country.

Criteria used in the study included Labor Force participation rate, average hours worked per week and workers with multiple jobs.

The Top 10 Hardest Working Cities per the study are:

1. Anchorage, AK

2.Virginia Beach, VA

3. Plano, TX

4. Sioux Falls, SD

5. Irving, TX

6. Scottsdale, AZ

7. San Francisco, CA

8. Cheyenne, WY

9. Washington, DC

10. Charlotte, NC

Some other information:

Key Stats

  • Sioux Falls, S.D., has the highest labor-force participation rate, 83.8 percent, whereas Detroit, Mich., has the lowest, 61.4 percent.
  • New York has the longest commute time, 39.4 minutes, which is three times longer than in Cheyenne, Wyo., the city with the lowest, 13.2 minutes. 
  • Salt Lake City has the highest number of volunteer hours per resident, 78, which is four times greater than in Las Vegas, the city with the lowest, 17.9.
