Wyoming Bail Agency Refuses to Post Bond for DUI Arrests on Fourth of July

A Wyoming bail bonds business is taking a stand against drunk driving this Fourth of July by refusing to post bail for anyone who is arrested for DUI over the holiday.

And it's not just in Casper -- Wyoming Bail Agency operates statewide, and Jason Nobles told K2 Radio News Thursday that he had already turned down three bond requests from alleged drunken drivers as of 4:30 p.m.

"We're just trying to take a stand and do our part," Nobles said in a phone interview.

"We have an obvious responsibility to help make bail for people who may have been charged with DWUI," his company said in a Facebook post Wednesday. "However, we also have a responsibility to the general public. And in order to help make a stand against drunk driving, and maybe help curtail some associated accidents or fatalities we will NOT be approving/providing any DWUI bail bonds for this Fourth of July holiday across the state."

According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, 237 people were killed in drunk-driving crashes during the July 4, 2017 holiday. Those DUI crashes accounted for 39% of traffic deaths reported during that holiday period.

Studies by the NHTSA show that the 4th of July rates highest for holidays involving drunk driving fatalities. We have an obvious responsibility to help make bail for people who may have been charged with DWUI. However, we also have a responsibility to the general public. And in order to help make a stand against drunk driving, and maybe help curtail some associated accidents or fatalities we will NOT be approving/providing any DWUI bail bonds for this 4th of July holiday across the State. In this day and age with ride-share apps, it's no wonder we even still have the amount of DWUI bail bonds we do. We hope everyone and their family has a happy, free, and safe 4th of July this year! Nobles said bond requests from people arrested on all other charges are being considered as they normally would. As for people arrested on a DUI charge, business will return to normal on Friday, Nobles said.

Despite the stance from Wyoming Bail Agency, those arrested for DUI can contact other bail agencies, which have not announced such changes.
