When you're in school, you think you already know everything. When you start living in the real world, you quickly realize that you didn't know as much as you thought you did. Such is the ignorance of youth.

While some subjects SHOULD be the responsibility of the parents, we, unfortunately, can't count on sperm/egg donors to have us ready to live in society. If you think about it, it's better to have someone help your kids with life's little nuances than to depend on some meth addict who may not even realize that the little person running around their house is even their kid.
