Watch Deftones’ Chino Moreno Perform Inside an Icelandic Volcano
Last week, we reported that Deftones frontman Chino Moreno would be performing inside a volcano in Iceland as the band made the trip North to the island country to take part in the Secret Solstice festival. Only 20 fans were allowed to attend the special event and now footage has surfaced of Moreno's solo set from within the dormant volcano.
Appropriately dubbed "Inside the Volcano," Moreno's three-song set was held 400 feet below the ground after being lowered down from the mouth of the Thrihnukagigur volcano, which translates to "Three Peaks Crater." The singer performed after local singer-songwriter Snorri Helgason. His three-song set included "Change (In the House of Flies)" by the Deftones (videos below) along with two covers: one from David Bowie's latest release, Blackstar, and the other from Morrissey.
As the BBC notes, Helgason had looked into how the temperature — roughly 40 degrees Farenheit — and the sub level environment would impact the tuning of his guitar, harmonica as well as voice, standing on top of a rock further away from the 20 attendees. Moreno's performance was amidst the collective and he had admitted he was "a little nervous" about the gig.
There was no fear of an eruption while the performance took place in the magma chamber of Thrihnukagigur as it had not erupted in more than 4,000 years and had shown no indications of doing so anytime soon, unlike Eyjafjallajökull, which erupted in 2010 resulting in disastrous airline situations in Europe.
Deftones are currently out promoting their eighth studio effort, Gore, which reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200. The band will embark on a North American headlining run starting July 31 and will feature Swedish hardcore legends Refused as support on select dates. All stops can be seen at our 2016 Guide to Rock + Metal Tours.
