Only One Wyoming Governor Was Born In Cheyenne, But 13 Died There
Of the 32 men to serve as Governor of Wyoming, and the 10 Territorial Governors before them, only one was born in Cheyenne. We've had Governors from Lusk, Lander, Kemmerer, Thermopolis and even New York City, but only one from the Capital City.
Robert Carey was born in Cheyenne in 1878. The son of Wyoming's eighth Governor Joseph Carey, Robert studied at Yale University before following in his father's footsteps and becoming the 11th Governor of the Cowboy State in 1919.
Carey is also one of 13 Wyoming Governors who died in Cheyenne. In 1903, DeForrest Richards became the first Governor to die while in office. In 1885, prior to statehood, Wyoming Territorial Govenor William Hale died during his term.
Jackson has produced more Governors than any other town in Wyoming. Three Jackson natives been elected, including current Governor Matt Mead.
Although none of them were born there, many future Governors studied in Laramie at the University of Wyoming. And while no Casper native has held the office, our seventh Governor Bryant Brooks died there in 1944.
