Maynard James Keenan: People Who Marginalize Muslims for ‘Archaic’ Views Are Hypocrites
Maynard James Keenan recently appeared as a guest on the Strombo Show with George Stroumboulopoulos. The Tool / A Perfect Circle / Puscifer frontman spoke about many fascinating topics during the marathon conversation, including the current political climate and how we need a “meteor” to get humans on the same page.
Keenan began to speak of the metaphorical meteor as an emergency so dire that humankind would have no choice to work together for a common cause — survival. When Strombo asked if Donald Trump was an “intellectual meteor,” Keenan responded, “Oh god, beyond. That’s terrifying. I don’t know if I really want to go into that. The bigotry, the racism and the negativity, just everything about it, there’s a war coming. There’s a war coming and it’s not going to be pretty.”
Maynard continued, “It’s funny, because those very people in the States that would marginalize Muslims around the world, and denounce them for their ‘archaic’ views, they’re demonstrating the same exact archaic views. The fundamentalist, crazy, extreme, Salem witch trial mentality that we thought we were beyond… I guess that’s the message I’ve tried to explain to people in the past, is that we’re not beyond that. We’re the same people that did those awful things to each other, we’re not beyond that. Our genetic makeup is no different than it was thousands of years ago, there’s no difference, we’re still monsters, the trick is to keep your monster in check. There is no way out.”
“Art is so drastically important,” Keenan looked ahead. “Throughout the ages you’ve had crazy things happen … [Art] is never gonna come in the way that you thought it was gonna come.”
