Jonathan Davis + James ‘Munky’ Shaffer Talk Overcoming Creative Differences in Korn
Korn’s new album ‘The Paradigm Shift’ has been out for about a month and the band has been making the rounds to talk all about it. One major topic that keeps coming up is what it was like to work with guitarist Brian ‘Head’ Welch again and overcoming the obstacles of creative differences after a ten year break. In a recent interview on the ‘Sixx Sense’ radio show, hosted by Motley Crue’s Nikki Sixx, Korn frontman Jonathan Davis and guitarist James ‘Munky’ Shaffer weigh in on just that.
When asked point blank about overcoming creative differences within the band, Davis was very honest, explaining, “I don’t think we really ever have not agreed on something. In this band we’ve all got to be happy with the final product. It’s like a marriage; you’ve got to give and take.”
Shaffer also weighed in, simply adding, “You’ve got to compromise.”
Davis then went into a bit more detail, offering up some of the behind the scenes work that went into the new disc and how things eventually fell into place. “[Welch] was really adamant about wanting to do really more heavier and more old school stuff and I wanted to do the new school stuff,” said Davis. “So, we have to figure out how we’re going to make this work together and we both compromised.”
He continued, explaining the process: “It really worked out good because by doing that we figured out all about the layering and the new electronic stuff, we made those guitars sound so much...I mean there’s a lot a stuff that you don’t really hear going on there that was placed just to make the guitars sound just humungous, and whatever was going on with drums, there was a crazy amount of layering that we did."
Davis points towards this type of compromise as a factor in the band's continued success resulting in a new album that debuted at the top of the Hard Rock Albums chart and at No. 8 on the Billboard 200. "I think that’s why we’re here twenty years later,” said Davis. “We all respect each other.”
