A soccer player and track athlete earned the WyoPreps Athletes of the Week awards, presented by Premier Bone and Joint Centers. Following last week’s performances, April 14 through April 20, 2025, Laramie junior Devani Romero and Saratoga freshman Brody Johnson were chosen for the weekly honor. Romero spurred the Laramie girls’ soccer team to a pair of road wins, and Johnson starred for the Panthers on the track in Rawlins.

Girls Winner

Romero scored five goals and had one assist in a pair of conference road wins for Laramie. The Lady Plainsmen beat Cheyenne East on April 15, 3-nil. Romero scored the first goal of the match and assisted on another. The next day (April 16), she was nearly unstoppable on the pitch in a 6-1 victory at Cheyenne Central. Romero produced the hat trick plus one. That equates to four goals against the Indians. Devani pushed her season total to 11 goals in 2025. Her effort helped Laramie move into a three-way tie for first in the 4A East Conference. The Lady Plainsmen are 4-1-1 in league matches with 13 points and are tied with No. 3 Sheridan and Thunder Basin atop the conference standings.

WyoPreps caught up with Romero to discuss her performance last week. She felt good about her play, her team’s effort and the two big road wins. Romero thought her goal at East came about because of her teammates, and it set the tone for the rest of the match. She said the key at Central was their communication and encouragement in that match. Devani discussed her love for the game, described how she plays, and more.

Boys Winner

Johnson won two events, took second in a third, and placed third in a fourth individual track event at last Wednesday’s Nancy Steinberg Invitational in Rawlins against competition from 1A through 4A schools. The freshman won the 200-meter dash in 23.06 seconds. He won the 300-meter hurdles at 41.98. Johnson was runner-up in the 100-meter dash by 0.02 seconds and crossed the line at 11.53 seconds. He placed third in the 110-meter hurdles at 16.82. Brody has pre-qualified for the 1A state track championships next month in all four events. He has the top time in Class 1A in the 100 and 200 meters, plus the 300 hurdles. Johnson scored 34 points at the Steinberg Invitational and helped Saratoga to a second-place finish in the team standings.

Brody visited with WyoPreps and reflected on his track meet last week. He believed he did well but admitted he’s still adjusting to high school competition. Johnson discussed balancing the sprint races and the hurdle races, his keys to performing well, how he needs to improve on his fundamentals, his love of track, and more.

Congratulations to Devani and Brody on being selected as the Premier Bone and Joint Centers WyoPreps Athletes of the Week!
