Beware Of Scam Court Notices Targeting Wyoming Residents
Another day, another scam is threatening Wyomingites. This time, a fraudulent "court enforcement" is circulating, and if you're not careful, you could be setting yourself up for problems.
A Facebook post from the Cheyenne Police Department was made to alert others about this document, and the Casper PD, along with other law enforcement agencies, have shared it to help spread the word.
In the age of AI, documents like the one attached to the post are easily created and difficult to identify as fake. So there are some things you need to keep in mind if you were to receive something like this.
On the attached document, the sections in red are fact checks, to help you understand why it is a phony.
- The judge's name is false and not verified.
- The violations may be legit, but the way they are listed and threatened is not how the courts operate.
- The statutes included in the document do not support the enforcement actions or threats.
- Courts do not issue 'final notices' with immediate threats.
- Never scan a QR Code you're not familiar with.
- It's not standard procedure to threaten license suspensions, credit damage, or collection without a court order or judgment.
Scammers often use official-looking logos, court names, and urgent language to appear legitimate. If you receive a notice like this and are unsure, contact the appropriate agency directly using publicly listed phone numbers or websites
If you receive a document and you're not sure why, contact the department or organization that supposedly sent it to you. Always remember that itis okay to contact the authorities if you're concerned about fraudulent activity.
