On Saturday, October 3, 2026, Wyoming had a perfect fall day. The sky was blue, the temperature was mild, a typical Wyoming breeze blew, and Laramie Peak served as the backdrop for the dedication of Wyoming Artist Chris Navarro's latest work of art.

The Windborne Wyoming Mustangs: Wall of Renewal in Esterbrook, Wyoming.

The art display sits on the road leading to the Wyoming Rescue Mission's 'Recovery Ranch,' a ranch the mission uses to give program participants a place to work toward their recovery goals.

The 8' high, 120' long art piece has been a vision of Chris' for years, after he saw a picture of decommissioned wind turbine blades lying in the Casper landfill. The blades are designed to withstand Wyoming's severe elements, so they are built to last, but when they are taken down, they aren't used for anything else and end up in landfills.  After seeing the picture, Chris started exploring ways to reuse those blades instead of letting them lie in the dirt.

After he started thinking about sculpture ideas using the blades, he came up with not just one, but six separate project ideas. The other five projects are still in the planning phase, but close to becoming a reality, including a project in Casper.

For this project, Chris, who has supported programs at the mission, like the Fishin' for the Mission Tournament, felt the Recovery Ranch was the perfect location for the Wall of Renewal.

It's not just about reusing the blades; it also represents the hope, strength, love, beauty, and community involved in the journey of people going through the recovery program. Many of them were instrumental in building the project and doing work that others will admire for years to come.

The 40 Mustangs painted on the blades, which were hand-painted by local artists, represent Wyoming's freedom, endurance, and a spirit that refuses to be contained.

Beyond the art of the Wall of Renewal, it also has a practical purpose. A snow fence. WYDOT will monitor the wall's effects on drifting and blowing snow to see whether out-of-service turbine blades can be used as permanent snow fences across the state. Again, they were built to last, so why not put them to good use?
