The relationship between a dog and its owner is special. The relationship between a U.S. Veteran and their dog is even more special.

In the U.S. there are approximately 18 million Vets and many of them suffer from PTSD or other life altering after affects of their military service. Service dogs are one of the ways that many of these brave men and women treated with their condition.

Right now, there are about 500,000 service dogs on duty across the country, with 19% being specifically trained to help their veteran owners that suffer from PTSD.

Casper College has been one of the top military friendly colleges around the country and is also home to the Casper College Veteran's Services club. This group is lead by Dr. Nick Whipps and a cast of veterans that work hard to assure that Casper College remains one of the nations top Military Friendly schools and is an active support system for veterans on campus and around our community.

Not only is the Casper College Veterans Club offer services and support to veterans, they are always in the community raising awareness and support for their fellow veterans.

Another great organization is Project Kenny, a nationwide group that helps provide veterans, who are suffering from PTSD, with trained dogs. The program is based out of Seattle, Washington, but the lead trainer is named Carol Salveson and she is right here in the Casper area. When you put two great groups together, you know you're going to get a cool opportunity for the Caper community.

Saturday September 9th, the Casper College Veteran's Services and Project Kenny Casper are teaming up to bring Veterans, their dogs and the community together for the 5th Annual Dog Trek. The Dog Trek on Saturday, is the lead in for the Sunday, September 10th T-Bird Trek half marathon, 10k & 5k.

The 1.5 mile Dog Trek is a dog/owner walk around the Casper College campus. The event is geared toward the canine's, their owners, and dog lovers around Casper. There will be vendors that will be specific to pets, food trucks and fun to help raise awareness and benefit the Casper College Veterans Club.
