Cowboys Invited to Second-Straight GOLFWEEK National
LARAMIE -- The Wyoming Cowboy golfers will continue the season after accepting an invitation to the GOLFWEEK National Golf Invitational.
The event, which is in its second year will be held May 16-19 at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Ariz. Wyoming earned a second-place finish last season.
“We had a competitive year in a tough conference that had six teams reach the NCAA Regional,” UW head coach Joe Jensen said. “For us to be invited to a postseason event is special. We can use this to build for next season, as we have a talented group coming back. It is a great way to continue playing and competing. It is a great opportunity for us as a program to face other quality teams in a national field.”
Teams were selected based on their season-long performance, overall rankings and head-to-head record against other NCAA Division I teams.
The scoring format will be like a traditional college team event with each team starting 5 players and counting the 4 best scores. Substitutions will be allowed as in NCAA play. Individual and team champions will be determined after 54 holes. There will be a playoff for team and/or individual competition if needed.
The Cowboys finished tied for seventh at the highly competitive Mountain West Championships. The conference sent six teams to the NCAA Regional, as that number tied a conference record. The MW has sent three or more teams to the regional in every year of its existence.
The Wyoming roster features a veteran team that features three players that helped the Cowboys to a second-place finish in the event last season. The Pokes have shot 23 rounds of 70 or less for the season including three in tough conditions at the MW Championships.
Jimmy Dales has recorded back-to-back top-10 finishes with a fourth-place finish at Missouri and tying for ninth at the MW Championships. He has a 72.3 stroke average for the season. Kristof Panke is averaging 72.4 strokes per round this season for second on the team.
Patrick Azevedo averages 72.5 strokes per round for third on the team followed by Jaren Calkins averaging 72.8 strokes per round. Davis Seybert has an average of 74.5 per round in his first season at the NCAA level.
