In the U.K., Vinyl Sales Have Already Exceeded All of 2013

Not surprisingly, the vinyl resurgence continues to head toward worldwide domination -- sort of. This week, the Entertainment Retailers Association announced that vinyl sales in the U.K. have already surpassed the total number of units moved in 2013.

"Year-to-date sales of vinyl albums now total 844,122, according to ERA analysis of Official Charts Company data, compared with the 829,243 sales recorded in 2013. With three months of the year still left to run, that means total 2014 vinyl sales will almost certainly exceed one million, more than four times their level as recently as 2008," the ERA reports.

Even with the good news, though, vinyl is not the U.K.'s favorite physical format. The 844,122 records sold this year "amount to less than 3% of the physical albums market with a massive 97% on CD."

ERA Director Kim Bayley says, "The compact disc remains the most successful disc format of all time. The fact that nearly two-thirds of albums are still sold on CD more than 10 years after the digital music revolution speaks for itself."

According to their website, the ERA "is a U.K. trade organization formed specifically to act as a forum for the physical and digital retail and wholesale sectors of the music, video and video games industries" and "works closely with the supplier organizations ... in areas relevant to entertainment retail."
