How Roller Girls Get Their Names

Have you ever wondered how the roller girls get their names? The A'Salt Creek Roller Girls were kind enough to let you know how the process works...

Skaters are “normal” during the day. We work, we’re moms, students, etc. Roller derby is our escape from day-to-day life and our opportunity to embrace a tougher, edgier side of ourselves. When you step into the rink, your derby alter ego takes over.
Derby names are creative and fun and can either be tough or just plain funny. There are a few leagues whose skaters are starting to skate under their legal names. Since roller derby is a growing sport, using real names may encourage the public to take the sport more seriously.

PICKING A ROLLER DERBY NAME:

For some girls it’s easy to come up with their derby name, for others it may

takes weeks or even months to find a name that feels ‘ just right’. Your name represents who you are, and that’s damn hard to do in only a few words. It should convey your personality, and also have an essence of ‘derby-ness’ to it; a certain toughness, wittiness and intelligence, often with a retro spark. Many take inspiration from a famous figure in history or pop culture, with the best names being plays on words, puns and double entendres. To complicate it even further, you can't have the same name as any other rollergirl, (yes, in the world) just in case you compete against her at some point.

"My name was picked out by some of my co workers, and we made it a game and still laugh about it. I must say that I don't have a favorite name I have helped create many and have seen so many great ones that I could not nail it down to just one, the names themselves are one of the greatest parts of derby to me. It really shows off a persons individuality and creativeness and gives you something to talk about when there is nothing else you want to say."

RuinHer Rosi -

"I involved my biggest fans, and made it a game, everyone wanted Riveter Rosi, but it was taken. RuinHer is kinda fitting though, I have seen a couple different videos with piles of girls and me skating away! My favorite name is one that I helped a friend come up with over Two Evils and a 6 pack, and that is Fidel Sayso!"

Dirty Darbi -
"I say dirty things all the time I am pretty sure Jina, Mel and Misty kinda picked it cause they would always say...your so dirty Darbi! hahahahaha"

Haul Pass -
"I have this horrible attribute that everyone has just come to accept...I am NEVER on time! So I figured if I gave myself a 'Haul Pass' I would always be in the clear! Some of my all time favorite derby names are Mama Cast, Hades Lady, and Gangsta Bitch Barbie"

Hannibal Hinds says she picked hers because she likes to eat meat, while Hir Majestie used her innitails.
