According to a recent ConcertHotels.com chart ranking vocalists on their vocal range, Guns N' Roses frontman Axl Rose was considered to be the "world's greatest singer." The result likely came as a surprise to many, considering the chart included vocalists from a variety of genres, including some of pop's high-reaching divas.

As the story has circulated across many publications in the past week, Rose eventually saw the piece turn up on Spin and offered a response to the proclamation to the music mag. In his response, Rose stated that he was flattered, but also offered up some of the vocalists he felt should be recognized for their vocal work. Check out his response to Spin below:

Big thanks to all the fans and media for the props reacting to the Spin top vocalists article.
From what I could tell, the original article was for the most part only talking about the professionally recorded vocal range of the singers they compared calling the entire group "The World's Greatest Singers." It's very flattering and humbling to be included in such an illustrious ensemble.
If I had to say who I thought the best singers were, I'd say first that I don't know there's a definitive answer as in my opinion it's subjective, and second that my focus is primarily rock singers.
That said, I enjoy Freddie Mercury, Elvis Presley, Paul McCartney, Dan McCafferty, Janice Joplin, Michael Jackson, Elton John, Roger Daltrey, Don Henley, Jeff Lynne, Johnny Cash, Frank Sinatra, Jimmy Scott, Etta James, Fiona Apple, Chrissie Hynde, Stevie Wonder, James Brown and a ton of others (predominantly 70's rock singers) and would rather hear ANY of them anytime rather than me!
Peace!
Axl

It should be noted that the ConcertHotels.com list only selected a few big name vocalists to be included in their research. In the period since the list made the rounds, Vintage Vinyl News took things further, adding more vocalists into the sample and they discovered that Faith No More's Mike Patton has the biggest vocal range at six octaves. Stone Sour / Slipknot vocalist Corey Taylor and Van Halen's David Lee Roth also eclipse Rose in terms of vocal range recorded on record. For more on the additions, click here.
