Flood Watch Issued for Central, North Central, Northwest Wyoming
A rainy forecast has prompted the National Weather Service in Riverton to issue a Flood Watch for small creeks and streams along the lower elevations of the Powder, Shoshone, and Big Horn Basins, including the City of Casper. The Flood Watch is in effect from Wednesday evening through late Thursday night.
The Weather Service says we could see up to one and a half inches of rain in the area, and the excessive rainfall runoff will cause significant rises along small streams and creeks. Those creeks and streams are already seeing high levels from the recent snowmelt runoff, and the Weather Service says additional rain runoff will push many of them to flood levels.
This Flood Watch affects the the Natrona County lower elevations; Cody Foothills; North, Southeast, and Southwest Big Horn Basin; Bighorn Mountains West; Northeast and Southeast Johnson County. This includes the cities of Casper, Kaycee, Buffalo, Cody, Meeteetse, Thermopolis, and Worland.
A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on the current forecasts, and the Weather Service says we should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible Flood Warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop.
