Earthquake Near Old Faithful Today, Steamboat Geyser Erupts Again

It's been an active seismic day at Yellowstone National Park today. An earthquake struck near Old Faithful and Steamboat Geyser erupted yet again.

The USGS just reported that an earthquake registering 3.1 struck just to the west of Old Faithful this afternoon. The University of Utah monitors confirmed this quake as you can see the big red spike near the bottom of this graph.

A 3.1 is a minor quake by most measures which you're not likely to feel unless you're located right above the epicenter. But, by Yellowstone standards, this is an above normal type of earthquake.

Earlier today, it appears that Steamboat Geyser erupted yet again. After being dormant for 4 years, Steamboat has erupted a record number of times since it became active again in the spring of 2018. You can see today's activity from the University of Utah monitors. It's the thicker blue line near the middle.
