Disturbed’s John Moyer Teaching Students by Ear at Natural Ear Music School
Disturbed and Adrenaline Mob bassist John Moyer may enjoy his time on the road, but when he’s at home music is still his passion.
The bassist owns and operates the Natural Ear Music School in San Antonio, teaching kids to play instruments by ear. The school began in Austin in 1991 and Moyer has been teaching there since 1999.
Moyer tells San Antonio Fox affiliate KABB-TV, “I know what it’s like to be that kid to be like, ‘What am I doing here?,’ you know. Cause I remember that, it wasn’t that long ago for me. I didn’t pick up an instrument until I was 16.”
The musician lives in Austin, but moved the school to San Antonio because of the city’s longtime support of metal and hard rock acts. He and a friend managed to secure space in a church to host the school. When asked about the unique venue, Moyer stated, “There’s plenty of rock songs out there that have clean, positive lyrics and that’s what I do with the school … And there’s no change in that whether it’s at a church or if I do it in a rehearsal room.”
The bassist concludes, “The kids who are out of their environment in another place come to Natural Ear Music and it’s a home for them. They get up on that stage and they’re special.”
