People in Japan must be hard up for entertainment! More than 200 teams completed in an All-National Digging Competition over the weekend. That’s right. Digging…as a sport. Competitors were given 30 minutes to dig the deepest hole possible. Extra points were given for “the most creative hole” and the most original costume worn by the diggers. First prize was 100,000 yen ($1,221) and a Golden Shovel trophy. Apparently this event drew more than 1,000 avid fans, so obviously people dig this sort of thing.
