The dog tags on the combat cross memorial at Veterans Park apparently were stolen recently, the Post No. 2 Commander of the American Legion in Casper wrote in a Facebook post on Thursday.

"We sadly have to report that some less than desirable members of our community have stolen the dog tags off our tribute memorial," Dean Welch said.

"They will be replaced but the disrespect of our fallen hero's and their sacrifice really disappoints everyone that understands the meaning this statue stands for," he said.

Veterans and their families dedicated the combat cross, also known as a battlefield cross, at the park at the East Yellowstone Highway and First Street on Memorial Day.

During the dedication, Welch said the boots signify the soldier no longer has to march into battle.

"The inverted rifle means he no longer needs a weapon to fight, and he no longer needs the helmet for protection because God is his protection now," he said.
