City crews will close the Lake McKenzie Dog Park to protect dogs and their owners at 5 a.m. Friday to conduct spraying operations for weed control, according to a news release.

The park, at 1691 Bryan Stock Trail north of Interstate 25, will reopen at 1 p.m. Friday.

"City crews will be applying herbicides which require the area to be free of people and pets for at least four hours, so for the safety of the public we are closing the park," Parks Manager Dan Coryell said in the news release.

The closure applies only for the fenced-in dog park and does not include the informal park area near the pond.

Dog owners are encouraged to visit Morad Park -- on Wyoming Boulevard north of CY Avenue -- and use the off-leash area during the closure.

The city only allows dogs to be off-leash at Morad and Lake McKenzie parks, according to the news release.
