The National Weather Service in Riverton is warning of bitter cold temperatures to start Thursday morning in Natrona County, as well as parts of Johnson County including Kaycee and Buffalo.

According to a Special Weather Statement, Low temperatures will range from 10 to 15 degrees below zero with locally colder readings to 20 below zero. The Natrona County Airport reported a temperature of 18 below zero around 5:30 am Thursday morning.

Although wind will be relatively light with speeds under 10 mph, that will still produce wind chill readings of 15 to 25 degrees below zero or lower.

NWS Meteorologists advise that you make sure to dress warmly for the morning commute, as frostbite can occur quickly on exposed skin. You should take appropriate precautions if you have to be outside for a prolonged period of time, and be sure to check on pets or other outdoor animals.

The NWS also says Casper set a new record cold temperature through 5am Thursday, at 20 degrees below zero. The old record was 16 degrees below, set in 1971.
