The Wyoming Department of Family Services has worked with law enforcement for years in dealing with difficult domestic situations.

This year, DFS employees ran with law enforcement in the annual Wyoming Special Olympics Torch Run on Wednesday.

"We have a lot of respect for them, and they're helping put on this torch run for Special Olympics," DFS investigator Jada Wittow said.

She was still panting after carrying the torch and passing to another runner at A and Beverly streets. Other DFS staff joined the run, too.

"We always can call law enforcement to come with us for our safety," Wittow said. "We work cases together with them."

The run started in Bar Nunn, passed by the Hall of Justice downtown and ended at the Hat Six Truck Stop.

About 50 representatives from local, state and federal law enforcement agencies participated in the run including the Casper and other local police departments, Casper Police Officer Ty Mower said. Mower is the regional coordinator for Special Olympics for the torch run.

The event raises awareness of and funding for the mission of Special Olympics, Mower said.

The torch run in Natrona County was the first of a dozen torch runs around the state during the next week, according to the Special Olympics website.

The Special Olympics Summer Games will happen in Laramie from May 19-21.
