Today, July 31, is the birthday of celebrated author J.K. Rowling, and her fictional creation, Harry Potter. So, in honor of this celebrated holiday in the fandom, I'm going to let my nerd flag fly. As you may know from the Harry Potter series of books, in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, students are sorted into four distinct houses. Gryffindor for the brave, Hufflepuff for the loyal, Ravenclaw for the clever, and Slytherin for the ambitious.

And while each person and student may have their share of personality differences, so too do cities in a given state. So let's sort the cities of Wyoming into their respective Hogwarts Houses for a little fun.

Laramie: Ravenclaw

This one is a no-brainer, given that Laramie houses the only University in the Cowboy State. With a population filled with academics, students, and activists, Laramie stands as an example of the Ravenclaw motto: Wit Beyond Measure is Man's Greatest Treasure.

Cheyenne: Gryffindor

Cheyenne, like Harry Potter himself, could easily fit in Slytherin as well. It's got the ambition to serve as the state capitol, with all of the politics that goes with it. But what we saw at Cheyenne Frontier Days this past week also tells them that they've got something else. Bravery. Enough bravery to climb on top of a half-ton raging animal and say "Let's see how long I can ride this thing before it knocks me into the mud."

Gillette: Hufflepuff

Being from Campbell County myself, I can tell you that Gillette exhibits a lot of the traits of Hufflepuff. From it's intense loyalty to it's region and culture, to it's ability to be particularly good finders (especially for natural resources!) Gillette should be proud to wear the black and yellow.

Jackson: Slytherin

Jackson exemplifies the traits of Slytherin most often seen in the original book series. Namely "My father will hear of this." However, it also takes a huge amount of ambition to live in Jackson as a general rule. While there are a few people there who could easily buy Nimbus 2001s for the whole Quidditch team, there are also people living and working in Jackson who have to be ambitious and work hard to make a living in a tourist town from the old west.

Also, Kanye West is technically a Jacksonite, right? And he's as Slytherin as they come.

But there are many more than just four cities in Wyoming. Where would Casper fit? How about Rawlins or Rock Springs? Let us know in the comments!
