Wyoming Baseball Prospect Brandon Nimmo Could Get Called Up the Majors This Week

It's been a long road to the Major Leagues for Brandon Nimmo. In 2011, the Cheyenne native was drafted by the New York Mets with the 13th overall pick in the first round; the highest drafted player to ever come from Wyoming.

After battling injuries and setbacks, Nimmo might finally get called up to 'the show' this week. The 23 year old outfielder is having the best season of his career at AAA Las Vegas, batting over .330 with five home runs and 34 RBI.

Meanwhile, the defending National League Champion New York Mets are struggling to score runs. Although Nimmo will almost certainly be called up to the Majors when the rosters expand in September, there's a good chance he could be headed to the Big Apple sooner than later.

Following recent injuries to Mets slugger David Wright and outfielder Juan Lagares, several New York media outlets are speculating that Nimmo will join the big league team soon.

When Nimmo gets the call, it will culminate a tumultuous journey through the minors for the Cheyenne kid who didn't even play high school baseball. Drafted five years ago primarily for his size and athletic ability, Nimmo was considered a 'raw' prospect with a lot to learn.

Since then, a season ending knee injury in 2015, followed by a calf injury during spring training have delayed Nimmo's road to the majors. Now healthy, the player who was once considered a "bust" appears to have turned the corner. After tweaking his swing last summer, his numbers at the plate have skyrocketed.

While Nimmo is the most highly touted prospect to ever come from Wyoming, the Cowboy State has produced many great players over the years, several of whom have had long major league careers.
