Tom Cruise‘s ‘The Mummy’ Summons ‘People v O.J. Simpson’ Star Courtney B. Vance

There were many great performances in American Crime Story: The People v O.J. Simpson, and Courtney B. Vance’s portrayal of defense attorney Johnnie Cochran was one of the absolute best (to say nothing of fellow MVPs Sarah Paulson and Sterling K. Brown). It looks like critics and audiences weren’t the only fans of Vance’s work on the series, as the actor is joining Tom Cruise in Alex Kurtzman’s reboot of The Mummy.

Variety reports that Vance has joined the cast of Universal’s reboot, which is set to kick off a shared cinematic universe of horror films based on their iconic classic monsters. Tom Cruise plays the lead protagonist in The Mummy alongside co-stars Annabelle Wallis (Annabelle) and Jake Johnson (New Girl). Kingsman: The Secret Service star Sofia Boutella will play the titular villain in the project, while details on Vance’s role are unknown — but feel free to envision this as a part of the O.J. TV and movie universe; I know I am.

Based on a screenplay by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus), the film is reportedly set in present day and is rumored to follow a Navy SEAL who leads his team into the dessert to locate a suspected terrorist; instead, they find a group of grave robbers who died under sinister, mysterious circumstances.

Alex Kurtzman is directing the film and is also creatively overseeing Universal’s new monsters universe alongside Fast and Furious vet Chris Morgan. The Mummy is set to hit theaters on June 9, 2017.
