A Casper man pleaded guilty to one count of possession of child pornography during a hearing in Natrona County District Court on Wednesday.

Jesse Carter, 42, entered his plea before Judge Daniel Forgey.

The case started in September when Microsoft reported to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children that someone used its Microsoft Skydrive to unload an image of child pornography.

In January, the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation executed a search warrant at his residence in the 2400 block of Grandview Place.

Carter told investigators he had one email account closed for suspicious activity, and said he had search for child porn once because he was curious.

Investigators later searched an external hard drive belonging to Carter and found what they were looking for.

Carter is free on $25,000 bond.

During the hearing, Carter told Forgey that he didn't know there was child pornography on the files he had downloaded.

The frustrated judge said the defendant was not providing the factual basis for the crime necessary to make the plea, so he asked defense attorney Dylan Rosalez to ask the questions. Carter then complied.

Forgey ordered a presentence investigation, and a sentencing date will be set later.

As part of a plea deal, prosecutors will seek no more than a three-to-five year prison sentence.

The government regards child pornography as a crime of violence because it involves sometimes brutal assaults on children who cannot give consent to sexual activity.
