The Libertines frontman Pete Doherty has never been known as all that reliable a source of Libertines news, and his proclamation that Jack White wants to produce his band's next album was definitely news to Jack White.

Doherty told a French TV station that the ubiquitous former White Stripes frontman expressed interest in working with the Libertines on the long-awaited follow-up to their 2004 self-titled album. "Jack White says he'd like to do it," said Doherty. "I'd love him to do it, it would be amazing, but I don't want to get too hopeful."

But a spokesperson for the ubiquitous former White Stripes frontman quickly cleared things up and told NME that White never wanted to work with the Libertines. No further comment was available.

The Libertines previously said they plan to release their third album next year and will perform new material on their shows this month across the U.K. and Europe. The band's first two albums were produced by the Clash guitarist Mick Jones.
