If you’ve been paying attention to the Marvel Universe lately, this news shouldn’t surprise you but today we have word on what will be the next new (read: non-sequel) superhero movie from Marvel Studios. Hint: it’s not ‘Black Panther’ or ‘Ant-Man’…

Latino Review is reporting that Marvel has internally set a 2014 release date for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ their next original superhero film. If you’re unfamiliar, think of the Guardians as sort of a galactic ‘Avengers.’ Over the years, the team has included Adam Warlock, Starhawk, Moon Dragon, Rocket Raccoon and more.

There have been rumblings about a ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ movie for some time and with the inclusion of Thanos at the end of ‘Avengers’ it was something of a foregone conclusion we’d eventually get a ‘Guardians’ movie.

Latino is reporting that ‘Guardians’ will directly setup ‘Avengers 2‘ which is scheduled to happen in 2015 and feature Thanos as the lead villain and the Infinity Guantlet storyline driving the plot. (This is a lot of Marvel mythos to get into in one post but Thanos gains control of the gauntlet containing the six gems that control the universe: time, space, mind, soul, reality, and power. He is now all-powerful and seeks to destroy all worlds to win over the heart of his love: Death.)

This looks to be one of the big announcements at Comic-Con 2012 and Latino reports that a script has already been written so it will be interesting to see if Marvel announces any talent (writer, director, cast) attached to the film during their presentation.
