Free Beer & Hot Wings: Canadian Couple Charged $1 Million After Giving Birth in U.S. [Video]
Last year, a Canadian couple took a dream vacation to Hawaii.
The woman was six months pregnant at the time. Two days into the trip, her water broke, she gave birth to her baby and then spent the next six months on bed rest in a Hawaii hospital. Her daughter, born nine weeks premature, spent two months in the intensive-care unit.
Blue Cross, her insurance provider, is now refusing to pay the bill because they say she had a pre-existing condition. They stated that she was "diagnosed and treated for a high-risk pregnancy in the six months prior to departure" and are using that as the basis for not paying up.
Jennifer Huculak and Darren Kimmel say she did not have this condition and that it was a bladder infection that caused her early labor.
The family is now trying to figure out what they should do.
Their options aren't that great: Attempt to pay the bill, fight the insurance company or declare bankruptcy.
