UPDATE: Mason Finley ranked 6th in the Rio Olympics Discus Throw with a 63.68m throw.

On Friday, shot putter and discus thrower Mason Finley qualified to advance to the final round of the men’s discus throw in the XXXI Olympiad in Rio De Janeiro.  Throwing the discus 208 feet, 11 inches on his last attempt to record the sixth-best mark in the qualifying round. The University of Wyoming graduate  is one of 12 throwers to advance to Saturday’s finals, According to gowyo.com.

Finley began his collegiate career at the University of Kansas before transferring to Wyoming. He won the U.S. Olympic Trials in June in Eugene, Oregon, with a throw of 218-11, so there is still room for improvement.”

Finley grew up in Salida, Colorado, his dad, Jared Finley, was part of the powerful Wyandotte High School Kansas state championship teams of the late 1970s. He was a discus thrower, too. Mason carries on the family tradition.

Finley was named to the ESPN RISE 2000s All-Decade High School Track & Field Team. He was also Track and Field News "High School Athlete of the Year" in 2009
