Every year it happens and every year we complain. I'm talking about Daylight Saving Time. It isn't so bad in the fall when we actually gain an hour of sleep, but in the spring, we time travel and lose an hour of much-needed sleep. Scientific studies have shown that Daylight Saving Time can actually pose a health risk. It's true!

A recent study by the American Academy of Neurology has shown that the transition to daylight savings time, can actually cause a common kind of stroke, called an ischemic stroke, which is responsible for 87 percent of all strokes and is caused by a blood clot that cuts off flow to the brain.

"Previous studies have shown that disruptions in a person's circadian rhythm, also called an internal body clock, increases the risk of ischemic stroke, so we wanted to find out if daylight saving time was putting people at risk," the study's author, Jori Ruuskanen of the University of Turku in Finland, told Biospace.com.

The study went on to show that for the first two days after transitioning to Daylight Saving Time, participants experienced an 8 percent higher rate of ischemic strokes, but that this negative effect wore off after two days.

For most people, we just plan on sleeping in on Sunday, but don't let the transition to daylight savings time mess with your head. It could kill you.
