A Casper woman who previously entered into a plea agreement after her arrest on suspicion of DUI and other alcohol-related charges was sentenced to a term in prison Wednesday morning in Natrona County District Court.

Judge Daniel Forgey ordered 36-year-old Edna June Adams to serve a two- to four-year prison sentence, and included a recommendation that she receive intensive treatment for substance abuse while incarcerated.

Adams was arrested Sept. 27 after a citizen called police to report a drunk driver in the area of First and Center Streets. A Casper police officer stopped the suspect vehicle, which was driven by Adams.

Following her arrest for failing field sobriety tests, Adams submitted a breath sample which showed a blood-alcohol concentration of .18, which would be over twice the legal limit to drive.

Assistant District Attorney Dan Itzen on Wednesday told the court that Adams' criminal record shows 14 alcohol-related offenses in the last 18 years, as well as six probation violations.

"How many opportunities have been squandered?" Itzen asked. "At some point, the interests of the community have to supersede the interests of the defendant."

Defense attorney Timothy Cotton said Adams has a "significant alcohol problem," and recommended she serve nine months at CAC followed by nine months of intensive supervised probation.

"Her life has been ruled by alcohol," Cotton told the court.

Adams, in this case, was originally charged with felony DUI as a fourth offense within the past decade, operating a vehicle without an ignition interlock device, no insurance and driving while suspended.
