The mayor of Casper has issued a call to the city's faith community to pray for healing after the shooting that left one man dead and a Casper Police officer in critical condition.

"As a man of faith and like many other people in Casper, I would suggest prayer for our city," Mayor Ray Pacheco said in a news release Monday afternoon.

"I am asking those of faith to join with me to pray for healing for our injured officer and healing for our community. Yesterday’s events have shaken all of us.  I hope we can come together in prayer to support one another," Pacheco said.

The incident occurred about 1:36 pm. Sunday when officers were dispatched to a vehicle complaint in the 1400 block of Fairdale Avenue, according to a news release from the Police Department earlier Wednesday.

When they arrived, two officers contacted a man they believed to be involved with the vehicle complaint.

During that contact, the man unexpectedly drew a firearm and shot at the officers.

The officers returned gunfire.
