A golf tournament set for next week aims to put money into a 'heroes fund' that would help cover expenses in the event that any Natrona County first responder were to be hurt on the job.

The tournament, set for 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 10 at Paradise Valley Country Club, costs $100 per player. Checks should be made payable to Wyoming Medical Center, Heroes' Fund.

A compelling, tragic reason for such a fund materialized earlier this year when Casper Police Officer Jacob Carlson was shot several times. He suffered severe wounds and was hospitalized for an extended period before being released from Wyoming Medical Center.

Sgt. Mike Ogden of the Casper Police Department told reporters on Monday that this is the first such fund to exist in Casper. It would cover expenses for any first responder in Natrona County and their family should that first responder become injured while working.

"Some retired local officers, they didn't really come up with it, but they started it because there are a lot of other communities throughout the United States that have a heroes fund in place all the time to help first responders when they need it," Ogden said.

"This is the first in Casper that we know of," he added. The fund would cover medical expenses if needed, as well as other costs.

And for those who aren't any good at golf, Ogden says checks can be dropped off at Wyoming Medical Center any time.
