There were six touchdowns scored, which included two by the defense, in the Wyoming Cowboys first major scrimmage of fall camp last Saturday.

The offense started slowly and was forced to punt on their first three possessions. The No. 2 offense struck first, as sophomore Nick Smith found senior fullback Jordan Ellis for a 12-yard TD pass. It was set-up by Nico Evans’ 40-yard run.

The defense then regained the upper hand. On the next play, senior D.J. May scooped up a fumble and scored from 12-yards out. That was followed by a fourth down stop against the number one unit at the defenses’ 37-yard line. Three plays later, junior college transfer corner Rico Gafford intercepted Smith and returned it 48 yards for a touchdown.

The offense did manage three more scores, which included a pair of Allen TD passes. One went 19-yards to sophomore James Price, while another was a 5-yarder to freshman John Okwoli. Milo Hall added a late 1-yard TD run in a goal-line series.

The defense added another interception by freshman Alijah Halliburton. They finished with three sacks, five tackles for loss and four pass-break-ups in addition to the turnovers forced.

After reviewing the film over the weekend, Monday, Cowboys head coach Craig Bohl noticed improvement, particularly on defense and with QB Josh Allen.

After one practice Monday, the Pokes will have two sessions Tuesday, another Wednesday and their final two-a-day on Thursday. They will practice once Friday and then have their final scrimmage Saturday, Aug. 27, which will wrap up fall camp.

Wyoming continues to prepare for their season opener Sept. 3 against Northern Illinois in War Memorial Stadium.
