Since the Earth is round, there is no way to properly transpose that onto a flat surface. The maps you've been looking at have been altered to take that fact into account, which results in skewed sizes of continents and islands. That huge chunk of ice at the bottom of the map you know as Antarctica? It's actually a lot smaller in real life. Canada isn't much bigger than the US, and Russia? While still more than twice the size of North America, it's actually much smaller than most maps portray it.
